We can share with you how to make teeth strong, keep bacteria from organizing into harmful colonies, develop healthy eating habits, and understand the role that time plays in the cavity formation process. Remember, dental decay is an infection of the tooth. Visiting us early can help avoid unnecessary cavities and dental treatment.

  • Establish a dental home within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by the first birthday.
  • Seek routine "check-ups" with your pediatric dentist every 6 months.
  • Brush at least twice a day for two minutes per time with fluoridated toothpaste. For under 3 years old, use a grain of rice smear of toothpaste. For over 3 years old, use a pea size smear of toothpaste. Encourage your child to spit. Do not rinse out the toothpaste, only spit out the excess.
  • Floss nightly before brushing to remove all of the food in between teeth.
  • Help children brush & floss their teeth until about 8 years old when they have the dexterity to effectively remove the plaque (where bacteria hides).
  • Wipe baby's gums even before their teeth erupt. Use a wet wash-cloth or toothbrush to clean the gums/teeth before putting the baby to bed.
  • Do not share toothbrushes or utensils. The bacteria which causes cavities can be shared from person to person.
